PCS infrastructure spending to rise by 50% in 1998.....

PCS infrastructure spending, which was down in 1997 compared to the
previous year, should rebound in 1998, according to the 1998 MultiMedia
Telecommunications Market Review and Forecast, a report recently
released by the Arlington, Virginia-based Telecommunications Industry
Association (TIA).

Quoting research conducted by the MultiMedia Telecommunications
Association, TIA noted that infrastructure spending in 1997 fell 12.5 percent to
$1.4 billion compared to 1996's spending figures. However, TIA expects that
as more C-Block licensees begin rolling out service, spending will bounce back
by an anticipated 50 percent, to $2.1 billion. The association also predicted that
spending will remain above the $2 billion mark through 2001, although that year
may see a 5.5 percent decrease in spending from 2000's expected expenditures
of nearly $2.28 billion.

What is the Contact/Up to Date product? Sounds like some sort of PIM with a syncrhonizer--is that the little guy they're going to tuck into the Palm Pilot?

Qualcomm recently bought a company called Now, which made two products, I think for the Mac only, called Contact and Up to Date (which always seemed to be bundled together). Reviews of the product were always positive, from what I can remember.

I haven't heard anything distinct from Qualcomm about a PDA/PIM, but they seem to be collecting a bunch of technologies that fit together in a fairly obvious way. I would pay a lot for a device that merged the Pilot with the Q phone, and ran best-of-breed software like Eudora, Contact and Up to Date.
