Obviously ASCES and BESTBOOKBUYS will cut into Amazon's
business big-time. Things change quickly when companies
go from no competition to lots of competition. Especially
in such a commodity business like this. Anybody else can
make it easy to click on their sites from simple internet
advertising (service provider, etc.). Yes, looks like
another VIVUS all right.

I find it interesting that even smart analysts are giving Amazon the credit for so much as a "new distribution channel." It's worth remembering that their distribution channel (mostly UPS) has existed for years, and was pioneered by such innovators as the Sears Catalog or LL Bean.

That's what Amazon is. An electronic Sears catalog for books. A great device for those people who want to buy something for later delivery without any need for seeing or experiencing the product in person (much more appropriate to CDs than books, in my opinion).

The touters of this stock seem to forget that receiving packages is fairly inconvenient for lots of us, and probably more so for working professionals than for people who have regular hours and can count on being at home at certain times. Guess which group consumes more books?

(Personally I have a Mailboxes etc. box so I can always have somebody receive things, but the annual cost kind of negates any potential savings from buying online...)

Amazon's touters would have us believe that the "internet-related growth potential" makes this company worth 100x more than the biggest competitor. Give me a break.
