No abalone, but I did finally get some sleep.

If we could get enough users of VoIP, the existing voice switching systems of the world become obsolete. So, we will see the usual innovators doing it within their corporate networks using a hybrid approach,[starting now and going on for 10 years] then finally voice, data, video and other services will be integrated and come in over the wires.[10+ years]

That appears to be what CSCO is betting the farm on.

For most RBOCs to have a chance, we have to 1)Change the depreciation laws for the regulated side of the phone business, 2)Take away the Guaranteed returns that PUCs allow and 3)have them issue some kind of "Do I have a Clue" test to all employees. I have spent a LOT of time crawling around BellSouth, and they suffer severely in Talent, when compared to most of the commercial companies I deal with. (But the BS employees who read this thread are some of the talanted ones)

So, during the next decade, some other service provider - like the cable companies - will probably be the only ones with the means in place to get the 2 way bandwidth to the subscriber premise. The just don't have enough head ins but they could place a MAX TNT on every 672nd telephone pole. (Have you seen the Pole Mount Version?)

I hate for my logic to flow like this, because I have never had cable and have never liked cable. I do have DSS and a 6' dish.
