>>>buy the company?

Won't happen as long as Pete Kight is CEO (own's 12% of the company). Pete built this company from the ground up, and will not let it go. No one entity(sp?) is allowed to own more that 20% of the company, therefore, a hostile takeover will not happen. A takeover would have to be approved by the board (since they own majority), and this will not happen. If Microsoft thought they would have a chance of buying CheckFree, they already would have. IMHO.

>>Not to discount MSFT's influence on CKFR, but how long will it take for Mr. Gates to realize he has lost to CKFR and buy the company???

Tried once already, about 3.5 to 4 years ago (before IPO). Pete was not selling. CKFR instituted a poison pill shortly after IPO. Bill would also have to convince major holders like Chicago Trib and Intuit to give up their stakes too. I don't think it will happen soon, if ever.
