Small Japanese firm president and wife hang themselves
12.41 p.m. ET (1742 GMT) March 3, 1998

TOKYO (AP) - The president of a small Japanese firm and his wife
hanged themselves in their living room Tuesday because of financial
difficulties, police said.

The deaths were the latest in a spate of suicides in Japan, including
three businessmen and a ruling party legislator who hanged
themselves in hotels last month. The legislator had been targeted in
a corruption probe.

The couple's company made picture and mirror frames. Police
spokesman Yoshikatsu Nakamura identified them as Yasuo
Nakajima, 54, and his wife Akiko, 50.

Japan's prolonged economic slump has hit hard at small- and
medium-sized businesses, which are finding it increasingly difficult
to get bank support.
