VI-Compliant Tandem ServerNet Technology Teamed with IBM DB2
Universal Database Enterprise-Extended Edition at Intel's Developers
Conference

First Public Demonstration of IBM DB2 Universal Database Utilizing VI-Compliant High-Speed
Interconnect

CUPERTINO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 25, 1998-- A leader in delivering high-speed cluster technology for
business-critical applications, Tandem(R), a Compaq company, today announced the first public demonstration of
IBM's parallel relational database management system (RDBMS) utilizing a Virtual Interface (VI)
Architecture-compliant interconnect: Tandem's ServerNet(R) technology.

The VI Architecture is a distributed messaging specification that has been developed by Compaq Computer
Corporation, Intel and Microsoft Corporation [Nasdaq:MSFT - news]. Its goal is to provide an open architecture for
clustered computing. It defines a transport layer and an application programming interface (API), which can be utilized
by software and hardware vendors to provide high-speed and low-latency communications between servers in a system
area network (SAN).

This demonstration of commitment by Tandem, Compaq, Intel and IBM to the VI Architecture is a preview of
products that will enable enterprise-level applications to be implemented on commodity-priced Windows NT(R) Server
clusters. Six ServerNet connected Compaq ProLiant 6500 servers, running Microsoft(R) Windows NT Server 4.0 were
utilized in the demonstration. A beta version of IBM's DB2 Enterprise-Extended Edition was implemented on the
cluster using the VI Architecture programming interface. The same complex query was run four times against the
database, implemented on one, two, three and six nodes. Linear scalability was demonstrated by the nearly six-fold
reduction in execution time seen when all six nodes were used in the demonstration.
