How would the scenarios mentioned in the following URLs affect the POG if those scenarios came to pass?

garynorth.com

cruznet.net.

Wouldn't we be lucky if we could have our gold/cash/properties and keep them too?

To hell in a hand basket........

A lot of messages on sites like this are concerned with financial disaster, etc.,etc.

I have read somewhere that gold stocks (certainly Homestake which was the one mentioned) did extremely (spectacularly) well in the 1930s, a period of deflation. This flies hard in the face of modern conventional wisdom. Partly this may have been that the public in the States anyway were forbidden to hold gold, and so owning a gold stock was the only way to have something related to gold.

In Canada there was a statute around the same time which made it illegal to issue a gold backed debenture. I know this because in the 70s I was involved with underwriters in designing just such an instrument, when almost at the last minute, one of our astute lawyers dug up the statute

I'm not sure that deflation is the issue in front of us now, though, quite the contrary. Inflation may be right around the corner, with increased money supply, and Asian problems.

CAn you remember what happened to the Dow when gold had its run up to $800+ in the late 70s. Did it go to hell in a hand basket or were things reasonably OK?
