It'll be very interesting to see the new product portfolio that Borland can put together to conquer the enterprise. I think they have a very good chance to become a major player with the following products: * The maybe best ORB, VisiBroker, which should sell well not only in itself as a basic CORBA broker but also with add-on products such as the transaction or security services which are rather complicated CORBA services to implement. * A set of development environments in JBuilder, C++Builder and Delphi which are now ported to non-PC environments such as AS/400 (where good development environments are lacking). * Database products in InterBase and DataGateway for Java. As for new products I think what they really need is a modeling tool, to be used for "modeling the enterprise", the business objects. The competitors are already at work at this, e.g. the cooperation between RATL and MSFT in integrating Rational Rose with Visual Studio or the new upcoming tools from ORCL. To be able to offer a complete solution to enterprise developers I think Borland will have to come up with some kind of product in this area (what I am talking about is a modeling tool that supports UML - Unified Modeling Language, and later on, the new Meta-Object Facility from OMG which will be a vital part of CORBA solutions in the future). Any other guesses what Borland will come up with (or need) in their product portfolio ? I think Borland has a great opportunity. They have a very good name here in Europe among desktop developers, and I think they can make good use of that name in making the leap to the enterprise. Go Borl. Best, /Hans-Erik Eriksson
