Economics and politics appear to favor 1080i as the defacto HDTV standard and 480P as the SDTV standard.

It will cost less for the broadcasters to upgrade to 1080i and they (CBS, NBC, HBO and a number of other major network/broadcasting players), effectively, will cut off Gates at the pass from easy entry into their closed power base during the highly lucrative, primetime-viewing periods.

However, the broadcasters will be able to generate extra revenue streams by offering 480P for non-primetime, viewing periods (offering five or six lower quality channels including Internet access).

It's to Zenith's advantage that 1080i is the universal HDTV standard, across the world. With 720p, the entire computer industry will jump into the fray of DTV and STB manufacturing. Much rather have Zenith continue to only compete against the Japanese and other foreign TV manufacturers than the more efficient US PC industry. Also, it's great knowing that Intel is in the 1080i camp, too....
