Yiwu Zhang, I apologize for the late response to your post in which you rebut another poster's allegation that the communist Chinese were the winners of the proposed "worst bastards in history" contest. You said: "Go ahead and dream your imperialist dream, and when you wake up China will be stronger than ever. I respect your loyalty to what is apparently your country of origin, but your interest in trading and investing seems to say that you are not in favor of a completely socialist system. Also, I would deny that the US is terribly imperialist, at least not in the sense of conquering by arms and taking possession of another country by force, at least not in this century. I also believe that ruthless and murderous leaders have arisen in all societies and within all races. It seems immaterial to me to grade a leader's evil with a dispute over whether he murdered several million more or less than some other murderer. Those who criticize communist/socialist societies (as I often do) should also admit that there are some advantages to these governments, namely tight control over crime and abolition of lowest levels of poverty. I happen to favor a multi-tiered society based on equal opportunity and accept that there will be some inequities based on the luck of being born into a more educated or affluent family. But I can understand that others may prefer the socialist system. With regard to the Peoples Republic of China, it would do all on this thread well to read their Constitution (adopted in 1978, and available through China Books and Periodicals, Inc., 125 Fifth Avenue, NY 10003). The interesting thing about the Chinese Constitution is that it not only describes rights but also duties of its citizens. This is a concept that seems to be lacking in Western cultures, and one among many, which we should seek to emulate. Yes, the government will protect you and give you certain rights, but you in turn owe it to your country to work and to behave in a responsible manner. I will grant to China's critics that the government has ignored, from our point of view, many rights of their citizens in the areas of freedom of expression, etc, even though these rights are spelled out in their Constitution. But our own US Constitution is often ignored, in my opinion. Examples include the IRS's ability to judge you guilty until you prove yourself innocent, the confiscation of property without conviction of crime (for drug offenses), and trying you twice when it is for a politically unacceptable crime (Stacy Koon's beating of Rodney King) and thus ignoring our Constitution's prohibition of double jeopardy. Respectfully, Jack
