No, the "shoddy" codec is the Trymedia. A constellation of little state machines from Hell, all on one chip, each doing their own little thing.

This new chip sounds altogether different, more like Sony's encoder with the RISC engine (taken from their decoder) that drives hardwired function blocks.

when you control the medium (tape,disc) 10% may not matter.
DVx probably does have a quality advantage (B frames, re-encode, etc.), but not cost. Is our little French Butterball willing to put broadcast encoder features in a Consumer Electronics box ?
