Wolf:

Welcome. TSO makes the salutations here so I'll not steal his thunder.

Just wanted to add that I also think DVD is definitely here. Usually the pace of product introductions and their success will be seen in how quickly the bigger PC companies incorporate the product.

The way I see it most of the big ones are doing so - even if initially just in their higher end models. However I did see Gateway have a DVD II (what ever happened to DVD I - that went by fast) for $2500.

In days of lore, Gateway had the $3000 model as the standard close to the top of the line but not quite there yet really fast and this is the computer I'd like to buy type model (!). With the advent of the cheap throw-away PCs not sure if I'd see the $2,500 as acceptance of DVD into the mainstream just quite yet.

I suppose the magic point these days is likely around the 1500-2000 level. If we see it here within the next 6 months in large enough quantities LSI will be much much higher than where it is today.

Ironic isn't it? LSI will be back into the quasi-PC arena again as a driver of growth. (Actually DVD is really consumer electronics but then if it goes into PCs then it's PCs - hmmm... must be the convergence thing!)

Wolf 2, glad to hear that DVD and some software is available in your neck of the woods. Here is an update. Went shopping on DELL's web site for a PC with DVD. Go ahead, try it yourself. Couldn't even get to a DVD option for the dimension desktop until I went to a P II @300Mhz which cruised in at about $2400. Therefore to some extent I stand by my earlier post. Yes, the live salesperson was wrong not to let me know that DELL had DVD available but it is still a very high-end price point. Haven't looked at HP and Micron to be fair but DVD is very definitely not moving out the door at even the mid-price range let alone the sub $1000 PC level. Still think LSI won't see big dollars on DVD without further substantial price drops. Just my opinion. Mike Doyle
