Summary Of BOJ Meeting Reveals
Gloomy Economic Outlook
TOKYO (Nikkei)-The first-ever public minutes of a Bank of Japan
Policy Board meeting on monetary policy, released Tuesday, revealed a
dim view of the country's economic outlook among board members.

The minutes indicate many participants in the Jan. 16 meeting expressed
concern that commercial banks will grow even more cautious over the
next few months about lending money to businesses.

The summary, also released on the Internet, mentioned that in-depth
exchanges of opinions were made about Japan's credit crunch.

It also suggested the current restrictive lending attitude of banks may
have a negative psychological effect on households and companies.

As to the central bank's continued policy of ultra-low interest rates,
members took the view it is appropriate to maintain the status quo to
curb a rise in corporate fund-raising costs.
