EU deepens probe into MCI/WorldCom merger Reuters Story - March 04, 1998 06:02 %EEC %MRG %US %GB %TEL %DPR WCOM MCIC V%REUTER P%RTR BRUSSELS, March 4 (Reuters) - The European Commission said on Wednesday it had opened a full probe into a merger between U.S. telecommunications companies WorldCom Corp and MCI Corp . The Commission said in a statement it wanted to investigate concerns about the combined market share the new company would have in supplies of Internet backbone services. The Commission, the competition watchdog for the 15-member European Union, has four months to decide whether to clear the deal. Although both companies are based in the United States, the Commission has the power to vet any mergers that could harm competition in the EU.
