Compaq To Enter The $1,500 Notebook Fray By Roger C. Lanctot, Computer Retail Week Compaq will join Fujitsu PC in the $1,500 notebook computer market March 18 with the Presario 1215, a 180-MHz Cyrix MediaGX-based notebook that just began shipping to retail accounts. Although the Presario 1215 has a suggested retail price of $1,699, the advertised price guideline set for its March 18 ad embargo date is $1,499, retailers said. "I can only imagine what that's going to do to my Fujitsu business," said one retail buyer who requested anonymity. "That [Compaq] product will be hot." The Presario 1215 comes with 24 megabytes of static RAM (SRAM) , a 1.6-gigabyte hard drive, a 20X CD-ROM, a 56-kilobit-per-second fax modem, and a 12.1-inch high-performance addressing display. The Compaq model matches up against the Fujitsu LifeBook 765DX, which is available in retail stores for $1,499. The LifeBook comes with a 12.1-inch dual scan display, a 166-MHz Intel Pentium processor with MMX technology, 16 MB of SRAM, a 2-GB hard drive, a 56-Kbps fax modem, and a 20X CD-ROM.
