The capacity to eliminate the bank from the transaction exists,
theoretically. However, the banks provide a storefront to gather
most of the customers and provides customers with a sense of
solidity versus a virtual balance sheet.

Additionally, with OFX banks can open up their accounts. However,
banks are under no obligation at this point to participate in
electronic transfers if they don't want to. Most credit unions
don't do wire transfers, for example. If the banks get distraught
by an end-run, they may not be able to stop someone, but they could
put some very strong temporary road blocks in place.
