I just got my credit interest and I've been margin short for quite a long time now. So, to answer your question, it doesn't seem to be true.

>>To all: anybody here has account with Datek? Have you been charged 7% interest for short position on the margin part? They told me they starts to do so since last Oct. Is that true? Your advise is very much appreciated. Thank you.<<

I believe the answer is that any credit balance is reduced by the mark-to-market value of the short securities in your account. If you have a debit balance, it it increased by the same value. So you may show net cash in the account but wind up with margin interest charges.

All: The main reason I'm trying to answer Yiwu's question is to make sure I've got it right. If I'm wrong, would those with a good understanding of what happens - in terms of impact on your credit/debit position - to the proceeds from short sales please correct me. TIA.
