Microsoft Windows NT Users Targeted by Hackers, Experts Say

San Diego, March 4 (Bloomberg) -- Computers running
Microsoft Corp.'s Windows NT software crashed from coast to
coast, mostly in government and university offices, because of an
attack by hackers using the Internet last night, the Associated
Press reported, citing computer security experts. The hackers
distributed deliberately malformed data that exploits a glitch in
the Windows NT program by instructing the computer to devote
excessive memory to a problem that can't be solved, said Ron
Broersma, a civilian computer security expert for the Navy. While
no real damage was done, problems were reported at seven
universities, including Massachusetts Institute of Technology and
four University of California campuses, and on unclassified Navy
computers at several locations, including Point Loma and
Charleston, South Carolina, AP said.

The FBI said Feb. 27 it was investigating two California
youths as part of a probe into a hacker break-in of non-
classified Pentagon computers.
