Bill, Yes, that is the solution using foresight and planning. (Grin) But, will that restore functionality to telecom aps like Apple Address Book and Apple Fax? I use the Ethernet network to back up from one computer to the other. The CD ROM backup thing really peeved me when, after installing OS 8, I noticed a telecom aps update on the OS 8 CD ROM and installed it. It didn't work well with the 6400 or 5400 and there was little in the documentation to warn the unwary (me). The only way to reinstall the original telecom aps was to use the original installer, installing all the original software including Mac OS 7.xx. Normal copying of the telecoms aps will yield non-functional space wasters. A week later, when updating to OS 8.1 with the extended file format, I went through the same thing again. I have two 6400's and one 5400. The 5400 still has an inoperable telecom aps installed. The Performa series was intended for the novice consumer and education. The disk image backup solution is easy, but a novice would not be familiar with the process. I'm no novice, but I got bit by the circumstance of unclear documentation and dead end planning. If the telecom aps can only be installed by the original CD ROM, that is a flaw in planning that leads the consumer into an OS upgrade dead end from which he must always go all the way back to the beginning in order to maintain the integrity of the installed software. On the other hand, if there is a simple work around, that should be well documented somewhere in the Readme files for the telecom aps. After reading all of them several times I re-formatted and started re-installing. I'm still bullish on AAPL. I mis-guessed everything this week. Jumped in too soon Monday, out too soon yesterday. Net gain = $30. Looking for some profit taking at or near close today. Will probably buy and hold at that time. To quote kstar on Yahoo's AAPL BBS, "Go Apple!" HerbVic
