<< cheapest way to vend books >>

NO WAY.. Maybe once the infrastructure is set up...
The infrastructure includes all the computer equipment, SW,
High Availability hardware/SW, etc... B&N, etc.. can't just
through this stuff together.

The infrastructure also includes advertising. AMZN's AOL deal
(and others) is VERY VERY big.

<< How can I compare AMZN to Wal-Mart, Home Depot, etc... >>

Oh, I can... I just look at the size of the potential market.
I look at the advertising, infrastructure in place, etc...
the Internet IS A NEW MEDIUM. Comparisons to the 'real' world
may not be applicable. The 'virtual world' is a new and dangerous
place.

Michael,

Among the BOOK BUYING PUBLIC (as opposed to that small percentage of people who spend 90% of their time online) Barnes and Nobles is probably the best known and most respected name in American bookselling. Borders, Crown, B. Daltons and a few others are probably the next ones MOST people would mention.

Barnes and Noble are online. Borders will be soon. Bertelmans bring more direct marketing saavy than just about anybody, along with a huge customer list to whom they can promote it in millions of CD and book club mailings every month.

For the online business to succeed, a lot of those "ofline" people are going to need to get in. They don't know Amazon from a hole in the wall.
