They wanted my opinion because they knew I was in at the beginning, and they wanted a person who looked for both sides of the story. He looked at my RMIL Swaysayers thread and thought that I would be the best person for the job, seeing as how I wanted both sides of the story. I've been assigned the rather herculean task of turning the whole SI/RMIL saga into a 300-word story for Wired's "New Economy" section. I know, I know, it's impossible. But I'm gonna try. That's why I'm contacting you, as someone who seems to be trying to nail down the essence of the story yourself (at least, as evidenced in the SI "Swaysayers" forum). I wonder if you'd be interested in talking about it? If so, email me your phone number and I'll call. Or, if you have a summary of the saga from your perspective, you could email that. Whatever suits your inclinations.
