WILTON, Conn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 4, 1998--The first DVD Professional Conference, dedicated exclusively to the future of DVD technology and its applications, was held earlier this month in Orlando, FL. DVD Professional: How to Produce & Implement DVD Technology attendees found an intense forum where industry leaders networked, learned from their peers, interacted with sponsors, and focused on the business of DVD. To illustrate the current viability and future potential of DVD technology, the entire two-day, dual-track conference was video recorded in the DVD format for an electronically published version of the proceedings.

Several industry leaders in DVD technology cooperated to make this project possible. CagEnt Technologies offered their MPEGXpress MPEG 2 encoder and ACXpress Dolby Digital encoder to digitize recorded video of the DVD Professional sessions. DVD authoring of the resulting audio and video files was provided by Daiken Software, makers of Scenarist, an authoring system widely used by DVD preproduction facilities around the world. Hosted by an SGI workstation, Daikenis Scenarist system can create menus, subpictures, navigation and presentation commands, and multiplex audio and video files to the exacting specifications of the DVD Video format. Pioneer New Media Technologies provided their recently released DVR-S101 DVD Recordable drive to produce a proof disc of selected portions of the conference that was displayed immediately following the final session.

The conference guide -- including attendee list, speaker bios and contact information, speaker presentations, and additional information, such as sponsor material, and several relevant articles previously published in EMedia Professional magazine -- and session audio tapes are available for purchase on the conference Web Site at: onlineinc.com.

DVD Professional was organized by Online Inc., publishers of EMedia Professional. Sponsors of the event included Optibase as the Corporate Sponsor (www.optibase.com), Nimbus as the Associate Sponsor (www.nimbuscd.com), Intel as the Technology Sponsor (www.intel.com), and Pioneer New Media Technologies (www.pioneer.com) and Technicolor (www.technicolor.com) as Luncheon Sponsors. (www.cagent.com), Crest National Digital Media Complex (www.crestnational.com), Hitachi America/Maxell Corp. of America (www.hitachi.com), International Digital Centre (www.idcdigital.com), JVC Disc America (www.jvcdiscusa.com), Kammann Machines Inc. (www.kammann.com), Macrovision Corp. (www.macrovision.com), Panasonic Disc Services (www.panasonic.com), Philips Electronics (www.philips.com), and Spruce Technologies Inc. (www.spruce-tech.com) were Exhibiting Sponsors. Gig Media Productions captured and authored the conference sessions on DVD.

Unknown Satellite Transmission A Headache For AlphaStar

March 4, 1998

The new owners of AlphaStar are dealing with a potentially serious "headache" involving an outside DBS transmission from an unknown source aimed at the service's past and potentially future customer base.

A message being received on channel 100 via old AlphaStar receivers are asking subscribers to fax personal information, such as an address and fax number, for "upcoming DTH service in the U.S." AlphaStar said it is not broadcasting those messages, and added it doesn't have any affiliation or relationship with the entities responsible for the transmission.

"It is certainly creating a new headache for us," AlphaStar's Chris Gilland said.

AlphaStar said it doesn't need to collect subscriber information, since it has subscriber lists from the old service along with the other assets.

A message on AlphaStar's web site states, "Official information about AlphaStar can only emanate from us, and will be clearly labeled with the AlphaStar logos, so that you will know that it is us.

"Therefore, we caution you about transmitting your name, telephone numbers or any other information to unidentified telephone and facsimile numbers. AlphaStar cannot be responsible or liable for the use or misuse of any information transmitted to such numbers."

AlphaStar's new owners, Champion Holding of Connecticut, hopes to re-launch the service in the second quarter.
