Oki Electric (6703) To Revamp Semiconductor Business

TOKYO (Nikkei)-Oki Electric Industry Co. unveiled on Wednesday a new strategy under which the focus of its semiconductor business will shift from memory to system chips by the year 2000.

One of Japan's leading manufacturers of high-tech and communications products, Oki Electric Industry plans to increase the overall value of its semiconductor business from the current 170 billion yen to 200 billion yen by fiscal 2000, while reducing the memory portion of that business from 50% to 33%.

In addition, the company aims to reduce its fiscal 1998 semiconductor capital investment by 40% from the previous year's level, to around 20 billion yen.

High-growth areas such as system LSIs (large-scale integrated circuits) will take on increasing significance. The company aims to increase the value of its system-LSI production from the current level of just under 20 billion yen to 70 billion yen.

Oki Electric Industry also plans to forego capital investment in multipurpose DRAMs (dynamic random-access memory chips) in fiscal 1998, as price pressures are weighing down the market for memory chips.
