Bay Networks Selected to Provide Network Infrastructure for Sun Microsystems Connectathon 98; 24 Hour/Nine Day Event Requires Stable and Reliable Network

SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 4, 1998--Underscoring its commitment to provide transparent, scalable technologies and interoperability through Adaptive Networking, Bay Networks, Inc. (NYSE:BAY) today announced its participation in Sun Microsystems Connectathon 98, a unique forum for testing software and hardware interoperability.

Connectathon is a network proving ground allowing vendors to test their interoperability solutions, with special emphasis placed on Network File System (NFS) and Internet protocols. Bay Networks was chosen by Sun to provide the entire network infrastructure for Connectathon 98, ensuring continuous operation for the event with its suite of award-winning networking products.

Connectathon 98 will take place at the San Jose Convention Center in San Jose, Calif. from 9 a.m. on March 4 through 5 p.m. on March 12, 1998. The event will run 24 hours a day for the entire nine days, requiring a network infrastructure from Bay Networks that is both reliable and resilient, as well as standards-based.

Bay Networks will install a complete line of products, including a BCN Router with 10M, 100M, FDDI and ATM; 10/100 Ethernet Switches; 10M and 100M Ethernet Hubs; an Accelar 1200 Routing Switch; a Centillion 100 Multi-LAN ATM switch for reliability and ease of installation; and Optivity Enterprise to verify test results. The company supports a wide variety of protocols and applications, including NFS V2, NFS V3, NIS+, IPV6, PPP, DHCP, WebNFS, ATM, Kerberos, Automounter, LDAP, Network Computers, Gigabit Ethernet and SVRLOC.

"Connectathon is an excellent opportunity for developers to prove that their hardware and software works in diverse environments," said Dr. Dan Pitt, vice president and director of Bay Networks Architecture Lab. "We're participating to ensure the common goal of making heterogeneous multi-vendor computing a reality."

Connectathon's success depends on reliable, resilient software and hardware. It is a great opportunity for vendors to verify that their distributed computing software interoperates with a wide range of client/server implementations on different operating systems. Everything from laptops to supercomputers can be linked together under one roof, encouraging interaction among vendors, engineers and developers in a confidential atmosphere.
