Analysts have named Franco-American driller Schlumberger Ltd (SLB - news) as a potential bidder. Schlumberger was off 1-1/16 to 77-7/8 in moderate trade.

France's Coflexip (CXIPY - news; CXIP.PA) rose 12/16 to 53-13/16 and Bouygues Offshore SA (BWG - news; BOUY.PA) eased 5/16 to 19-3/8. Norway's Smedvig A/S (SMEO.OL) (SMVb - news) rose 3/4 to 21-3/4.

Among other active issues, British utilities National Power Plc (quote from Yahoo! UK & Ireland: NPR.L; NP - news) fell 4-5/8, or 11.6 percent, to 35-1/4 and PowerGen Plc (quote from Yahoo! UK & Ireland: PWG.L; PWG - news) dropped 2-15/16 to 50-1/2 amid worries about their margins.

Goldman Sachs cut its rating for National Power to market performer from market outperformer. The companies were down in light trade and among percentage-loss leaders on the New York Stock Exchange, with National Power topping the list.

Telefonica de Espana (TEF.MC) (TEF - news) fell 3-7/8 to 102-5/8 in New York Stock Exchange trading after the company said delay in rejiggering its rates would have a ''negative impact.''

Well, like I said the Intel news would hurt the techs something fierce. Quote.com shows Dell trading at 131 in after hours from a close of 139+. CPQ is also down to 28 from 29.5. OUCH. Hopefully this money will find its way to the sector with the best fundamentals.
