I've never prepared a return with thousands of trades... but I list every trade or group of trades.

Some brokerages provide a Sch D formatted gains/losses schedule. A taxpayer could pull off various subtotals off this schedule and for the DESCRIPTION say "see schedule attached".
.
For the volume you've mentioned, this might be "a must"
