HK's Hutchison Telecom Says Its Motorola Network Working

By WAYNE ARNOLD
AP-Dow Jones News Service

HONG KONG -- Responding to a report of chronic defects in cellular network equipment from Motorola Inc. (MOT), Hutchison Telecommunications Ltd. unit said its own Motorola network was performing satisfactorily.

The Wall Street Journal reported last week that defects had prompted a U.S. cellular operator to cancel a $500 million contract with Motorola for a new cellular network using a relatively new technology called CDMA. The report speculated that Motorola could risk losing other such contracts because of the defects.

Hutchison, a unit of Hutchison Whampoa Ltd. (HUWHY), was the first operator in the world to launch CDMA services in October 1995. But early network glitches and the popularity of rival technologies stifled the service's popularity, prompting Hutchison to re-launch the network a year ago under a new name. The service now has more than 200,000 subscribers.

A spokeswoman for Hutchison said the company would continue to invest in Motorola CDMA equipment and that the company was planning to spend HK$1.5 billion to upgrade its own CDMA network, including the purchase of Motorola microcell stations to improve the network's coverage inside buildings.
