Gateway Guts ...

Someone recently inquired as to whether a Gateway machine was open architecture. I own 2 gateways (networked via Linksys 32-bit PCI adapters and hub) and recently opened the pandora's box of figuring out (long after the purchase) which MB/chipset/etc. Here's what I found:

Pentium-90 purchased 2/95 (and overdriven to 180mmx)
Intel Plato MB 82430(Neptune)Chipset Socket 5 baby AT p54c
Western Digital 1gb ide hd
mmi (Mitsuibishi?) 4x cdrom
Ensonic Sound card, ASC31 speakers
STB Trio64 2mb dram video card
Telepath II fax/modem (U.S.Robotics)
Full Tower w/145 watt ps
Anykey keyboard
PS2 mouse
The bios was the only tweaky thing I found: AMI 1.00.12.axit, the t makes it GW's version. Therefore it lacks SCSI support.

Pentium 166 purchased 6/96
Intel Thor mb, 82430fx (triton) chipset, socket 7, Advanced ATX, p54c
Western Digital 2.5gb hd
Matrox MGA video card
Wearnes 8x cdrom (replaced after it died)
U.S. Robotics modem...
Bios 1.00.01.cn0t (again that 't')

Neat MB page: magsys.co.uk

Gateway is not above using the FUD (fear uncertainty doubt) approach to keep you buying gateway, but basically (especially after the warranty expires) they are open. Cheers.

CPU's..Intel 333..deschutes

Excerpt

>>With the 333 MHz model introduced on January 26, Intel is sending the third version of the Pentium II into the race. With a few changes to the new processors details, it is supposedly cheaper to manufacture
than its predecessor and runs faster, too. But as usual, being economical demands a small renunciation in another area.<<
