Merced is not playing catch up, Alpha is not competition.

The issue is not raw CPU performance, it is compatability with the installed base and ongoing industry-wide support.

Alpha is already dead, and it will an upset if Merced does not kill Sparc within 3-5 years of introduction.

Maybe you don't get out enough? Try Alpha from DEC/CPQ and, of course, Sparc from
SUNW. Merced is actually playing catch up.

I can agree with you that technically MIPS/Alpha could take on
pentiums anyday. Matter of fact imho they were 3 years ahead of x86.
The much vaunted IA64 of merced is 6 years too late. _But_ pentium's
competitor have been failures in the market. That's what we as stockholders care about, and that's why x86 architecture as the
single dominant standard will keep intc's stockprice to follow
a variant of moore's law(price double every 18 months on ave.).
Don't go sour on intc. Its an awesome company!
