I was considering shorting it yesterday afternoon. Luckily I sold out of most of my high-tech holdings earlier this week and have no semi or semi equipment stocks. Wish I had shorted the bunch. I still think that the correction will be followed by a spring rally. Then we will probably see a downturn this summer. Price competition will be tough for many commodity chips and peripherals. Software and a few growth areas may do relatively well despite the climate of aggressive price competition because overall numbers of PC and networking products sales should be very good.

IDTI is now around my bogus number of 13 1/2. Some others had lower targets for the pull-back and they just might be right. If we get a dip very much lower I think it will draw in the institutional investor if they are not scared away from the sector entirely (these guys often tend to rotate out of the sector rather than try to pick winners from losers in a bear market. The way I see it is if IDTI gets realy clobbered, all the better for buying at a distressed price.

Intel is doing a heck of a lot of "vaporware" sort of pre-announcements of new "Celeron" chips; biz.yahoo.com. Their latest announcements are still several months from being shipped in quantity and are aimed at limiting the impact of competitors focused on the sub $1000 market. Intel hopes to differentiate the market further between value conscious buyers and those who want all that massive power (20%-30% better performance in SOME applications). A nice marketing ploy, analogous to putting a pretty gal on the hood of a muscle car - "you're not a real man unless you are driving a mega ball buster PII" for $2700. "For you small weenies, we have the economical Celery 1500. It isn't a muscle machine like our Mega B.B. 3000, but it gets you where you need to go with the kiddies". I laugh, but the campaign will probably work to some degree with the gullable consumer and trade media.
