Robbie,

I don't see Ascend as a really good match. CPQ needs a really good arrangement with somebody who has a broad-based networking product line. The big players are CSCO, COMS and BAY. The first two would be too big to swallow, so that leaves BAY.

Of course, it doesn't need to be an outright purchase either. An agreement of some kind would be really good for them too, and again BAY would be a good target because they're small enough that the benefits of an alliance with CPQ could outweigh the loss of cooperation with others. CSCO and COMS have to work with the whole industry, so won't ally themselves one way or the other.

Of course, CPQ could elect to just work with Intel for a while on "developing standards" for the industry, which would also help Intel's push into networking.

Most likely they won't do anything until these current mergers are done and stable. Then look for them to go shopping again...
