Nah, it doesn't hurt Intel to have really small, second rate competitors around. Even helps them vis a vis the Department of Justice. What Intel doesn't want was a technologically equal competitor with 30% market share.

It's unlikely anyway that Intel could put all its x86 competitors out of business. Much more likely that it would inflict enough financial pain that they have to sell out to a larger company, as Cyrix did. But that still leaves Intel with a competitor--just one that's financially stronger. x86 is too profitable for companies not to want to TRY to invade Intel's turf (whether or not that's a good idea is another matter entirely).
