I think the big difference between now and the 30's was the magnitude of private pension funds supporting the market. The money has to go somewhere, and the pension funds are willing to buy as long as they can convince themselves in their computer models that the stock prices will be worth more in 30 years than they are today. And yes, the TV commentator started her report of Wall street this morning with "this is a buying opportunity for tech stocks".
The problem for the man in the street is " when do you sell if you're still making money?"
