Jim - Re: "can you recommend a good router?"

You bet I can!

If you are in need of a hand-held router (as opposed to a Router-Table mounted router), I would highly recommend the Bosch Model 1613EVS. Cost $199 - $209

This is a 2+ horsepower PLUNGE router with electronic speed control including a "soft start".

The soft start capability is beautiful. Instead of switching on a 2 HP motor and having it torque nearly out of your hand, the 1613EVS ramps SMOOTHLY up to speed from 0 to the set speed (8000 to 23,000 RPM). There is virtually no loss of control.

As I noted, it goes uo to 23,000 RPM form 8000 RPM so it will easily adapt to both soft woods and hard woods.

It has a 1/2 inch collet - for sturdy router bits, and a 1/4 inch collet is provided for smaller bits, if required.

When I first got my 1613EVS I couldn't believe how smooth it was to operate - so I bought a second one soon therafter - very good for dovetails where you need to swap bits.

The one draw back - it has about a 1 3/4" diameter limit for the router bit.

For a table mounted router, I recommend the Makita 3612 C - 3 1/2 HP with variable speed and a FAT DECELERATE capability. Great for a router table. Cost - $269 +/-

Let me know if you need more information.
