ORCL is moving from being primarily a technology provider to becoming the "application backbone" of client companies. Currently, ORCL's number one position in database sales is not good enough in the sense that SAP AG still dominates the applications side, which provides a lot of additional leverage and/or service revenues. ORCL is trying to reposition itself in the marketplace which includes changing its "hit and run" culture. Here's some text I pulled from a recent industry analysis:
"When we talk to clients who have considered Oracle applications, we are amazed at how frequently Oracle has been eliminated because of poor execution . . . On a good day Oracle can present product capabilities that match or exceed anything in the market. However, prospects are often given a disorganized and confusion presentation. Even at at its best, Oracle has failed to offer the kind of focus and consistency that wins the confidence of global customers."
These are the issues the ORCL is aggressively trying to address. Part of that involves developing industry-focused virtual teams to offer specialization and best-of-breed solutions. There are a lot of things that must come together, but LE and company know what is at stake as industry moves to the net, and I think they have the brains and talent to pull it off. But again, it may take another quarter.
Good luck to all ORCL longs.
