If anyone can point me to a resource where I can get a better understanding of market maker shenanigans, it would be much appreciated. Looks like I've got a lot of homework to do.

Jane I believe TM and LE and the like do just as you say. MMs or not these short term players profit from the near term instability they can create. Real news moves the price long term, but for a few minutes or days hype and BS can move a stock, and since they are in or out first they get hurt the least.----If they are trying to push you out, they want to buy lower. If the are trying to hype you in, then they are trying to run the price up short term. If you don't have real time quotes and fast execution time on trades they are always going to beat you to the door. It's just a different game than the investing that most people try to do. You have to judge who is here with you to invest and who is here for a quick grab and run.
