I believe that Microsoft has already made Win98, release candidate 0 available to the public.

That's the Beta that you get to pay to have the privilege of testing, right?

Of course, your statements indicate that you probably won't listen to anything that portrays Microsoft as honestly trying hard to release a quality product on time, so I suspect you'll respond with something negative.

I was merely commenting on Gates' shrewdness as he didn't get to be the World's Richest Man by falling off the turnip truck as it drove onto the dock from the ship this morning. I approve. I am a shareholder after all. And when you're dealing with the government it doesn't matter who's the most honest or who's in the right. What matters is who can play the power games best. (Actually Gates has been a little lacking in the political games and only recently has hired the hoards of sanctioned bribe artists known euphemistically as "lobbyists.")

I'm also a software engineer and I know from more than a decade of experience that in the absence of hard contractual deadlines with penalties for missing them software is almost never released on time because of the software engineer's inherent desire to tweak the product to perfection.

And, since when has Microsoft released something on time? Should I believe that Microsoft has managed to release something on time for the first time ever, or should I believe that the man who was shrewd and ruthless enough to crush his competition and become the World's Richest Man has something up his sleeve to thwart Jackboot Janet and the Department of inJustice?

All, thanks for comments, yesterdays action in msft was heartening. I will be adding to core position (established in the $70s) on dips. Whether growth stays at current levels or drops over time to 30%, the stock is fairly valued given low interest rates, even though p/e is high. If one has more than a one year horizon, any contraction in p/e is inconsequential compared to long term growth rate, even if its 30%. If it continues anywhere near current growth - thats gravy. DOJ hearing is noise. Also msft seems to have solid base in the 60 - 75 level on which current advance is based and has history of jumping in spurts, basing, jumping in spurts.
