Hey if we are to believe Del there should be life in the moon waiting for us! Moon food probably tastes like chicken. Break out the bubbly indeed. Ignacio

This is one of the coolest things I've heard this decade. If you ran the program (current technical and price constraints operate - no machinae e deo) what would you do now? Mount a manned prospecting program, or use this as an opportunity to drive development of smart cybernetic probes?
Imho a working industrially capable moonbase will be our ticket to the rest of the solar system.

Bonus question (open to all who want to take a crack at it).
Build a spaceship that:
orbits the Earth. Let's postulate an unbreathable atmosphere just for the phawk of it. Lands on the surface. Carries a crew of six. Allows them to explore for, say, two months. Then boosts the crew and a metric ton of samples back into orbit. (Where the mothership that brought'em here is parked.)
Functionally, this does the job of the old Lunar Excursion Module. Practically, there is the problem of Earth's deep g-well, There's also the atmosphere, which helps the landing leg but hinders the return ascent.
I have been unable to come up with a believable ship. The spot where I hang up is how to get the fueled ascent stage safely onto the ground.
