Maybe more important -- they have not done it! Worth thinking about as the returns have gotten so heady!

Indeed Microsoft recently acquired WEBTV and Hotmail. You can bet that they are now making significant investments and improvements in these services. Soon the onslaught of new services will occur and YAHOO's dominance will fade. YAHOO's resources are stretched very thin, they have diluted their share value considerably already, they increasing rely on high price labor (content makers), and they just do not have the deep pockets of the likes of Microsoft. I see a Netscape like breakdown in the near future. Today there is the perception that it is the leader in a hot field, tomorrow it may be number 2 and share value, earnings etc will all of sudden matter.

Yahoo has the brand name. Its like soap. Anyone can make soap but
P&G has all the brands. Microsoft has sunk millions into their
MSN but that hasn't stopped yahoo. Microsoft wasn't too successful
with personal finance either. Companies like Intuit and Yahoo
protect themselves with the brand and not the technology.

<< Your comparison of YHOO to CSCO and MSFT doesn't make sense. Read up in any economics text on what they call "barriers to entry." >>

Just like Anindo said, read up on the value of brand names. There are little barriers to entry for soda pop, right? Jolt, Jake's, etc are little guys that came out with niche colas.

But who gets the duckets? Coke.
