NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) bought 500,000 shares of
Wavephore Inc. (WAVO) on the open market, taking a 2.88% stake in the company,
according to a list of institutional holders released Thursday.

Microsoft completed the purchases by November of 1997, soon after it agreed to
include WavePhore's data broadcast software and service, WaveTop, in its Windows
98 operating system. WavePhore provides high-speed data delivery for real-time
news services.

Wavephore's Chairman and Chief Executive, David Deeds, had no comment on
Microsoft's intentions in purchasing the shares, but said he is not surprised
about the investment since the companies have a "good relationship."

Microsoft officials were not immediately available for comment.

Hoak Breedlove Wesneski analyst Jay Somaney said the investment is "a major
endorsement of Wavephore's technology" and noted that Microsoft "invests in a
lot of companies whose technology it believes in."

Intel Corp. (INTC) also holds 2.88% stake in Wavephore.

Wavephore's shares were recently up 9/16, or 6.3%, at 9 7/16 on Nasdaq volume
of 164,300 shares compared with an average daily volume of 141,400 shares.
