***Somewhat OT*** I know this isn't directly related to P&F, but what do you think about the idea of shorting (or buying puts) on a company based on rumors that it will be bought. Typically, what happens when a rumor like this comes out is the stock will be driven higher and then slowly over a few weeks slip back down. The reason is that rumors of acquisitions are not always true and even when they are it takes quite a while for them to actually be announced - leaving investors in the dark until then. How does S3's chart look ? I know they've been slipping steadily. Intel won't buy SIII because they already own Chips & Technologies giving no good reason to pick up SIII (in fact, Intel will probably bury SIII competitively). C&T will provide Intel with a lot of 2D and 3D graphics technology along with other technological developments not known to the public. Any thoughts ? A true P&Fer probably wouldn't touch SIII one way or the other. M * Shares of computer chip maker S3 INC rose sharply amid widespread rumors it was in takeover talks, but the company denied all the rumors. "I'm not aware of any talks that are going on," said spokeswoman Kelly Morris. "There's nothing." Among the rumors was a report published by Charles Payne of the investment newsletter Wall Street Strategies that S3 was in negotiations with INTEL CORP, in a deal "for S3 to receive 14 dollars in Intel stock." While some other chip makers were also named as potential buyers of S3, Fahnestock & Co Dan Scovel, said he considered the reports unlikely. "Takeovers in the semiconductor industry are pretty uncommon," he said. (Reuters 03:12 PM ET 03/06/98) For the full text story, see infobeat.com
