No, they should listen to thier market. It just so happens that the marekt wants cheap, fast PCs
with a lot of cheap software and third party support. Here comes Dell adn Compaq. Sun has a
chance to prevent market share deterioration, but it can't happen at high margins.


I really don't see how Sun could ever compete with the PC vendors on a head-to-head competition, since they would be essentially dumping their main source of revenue to compete with other companies who have already established leadership in the volume market. Even if Sun had dropped prices a lot earlier, it would not have gained PC converts. At best, it would have kept existing customers and gained some converts from competing UNIX vendors. But I suspect that this would have been done at the expense of overall revenue growth, and in the end still leads to the same end. As it is, Sun has managed to be a very successful, profitable company, and it is very much debatable as to whether any major change of strategy earlier on would really have been for the better.
