Index funds are a possible big driver here. Once again, if Compaq is part of an index fund, earnings don't mean much. If money continues to flow into the index fund, the manager HAS to buy Compaq in proportion to the index. So it keeps going up, or at least its downside is limited.

Also most long term investors realize that this is probably going to be a lousy quarter for the techs, if not for the overall market, and look at this as a buying oppertunity. They aren't traders, so 9 month swings don't make much of a dent to them.
