KAD, your post is reasoned and encouraging but I think DEC could bring down the stock price even more if they miss their quarter (pretty de rigeur for that co. as of late). dulane

Whether CPQ will make you money is not the question at hand here. I know CPQ will EVENTUALLY make me some cash. I bought some in 1991, and had to wait over a year and a half before I got to break even, but it was well worth the wait. This whole break-even quarter just took me by surprise. Also, DELL saying that business is normal seems odd given that INTC, MOT, and CPQ are having such problems.

KAD..I like what you are saying here. Biting the bullet on the over stuffed inventory will prove to be the right thing to do. As a result the PC market will have to re-think th BTO model/just in time model. WE are seeing the chippers pushing on the boxers and the boxers pushing on the wholesalers who push on the retailers, yada yada yada. This is exactly why the DELL model will fail now. Why should these enterprises carry the risk so that DELL can have his cake delivered today and get icing tomorrow? I'm just getting started so please some thoughts. steve

IN addition, how about factoring in the rationale for buying DEC? CPQ has been pushing the sub $1000 PCs since last winter/spring... and they have been selling? And the profit margin is less. And the more recent sub $1000 can even be used on LANs. And They have been, perhaps, cannabalizing their own medium and high end biz PCs? And do they consider buying DEC because the upscale, enterprise biz will compensate for extreme competitiveness in the home and low end biz markets CAUSED by their entry in the sub $1000 category?

You have to wonder exactly what the game is here... it almost sounds like they are desparately groping for a solid business niche, or they're afraid they don't have one, and they're trying to cover all bases, all of the time, and getting squeezed.
