Hi Susan:

Well, I think in this case Katherine was talking about smashing and ruining the lives of the people around them. Their love was a secretive, illicit, adulterous affair so, maybe she was also talking about their own lives as well..

But as Mike said the pottery also got quite a shaking in the midst of their passion, I expected to see a few go tumbling to the floor.
