The solution is based on Discrete Multitone (DMT) line coding with an Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) network interface. The platform on the 5ESS switch will allow service providers to use existing phone lines to offer their residential and business customers ADSL services such as access to the Internet at speeds nearly 30 times faster than today's fastest modems.

If Westell uses either TI's ADSL/DMT or Motorola's DMT, they'll pay royalties. If LU's developing a DMT solution, there's been no licensing agreement that I know of.

This is very good for TI, as I'm quite sure their chip's involved.
