Barry,

Compaq's coporate computer business is not doing well. They said the consumer market remains strong. You know which chips are going into which models.

In a conference call with analysts, Compaq said
European sales were on plan, Asian sales were weak and Latin
American sales were fine. But North American sales,
particularly among corporate buyers, were weak because of
collapsing sales.

Are you willing to blame these weak corporate sales on the MPU inside? Probably not.

Bob

Here's a couple of news items I missed, details available on the Yahoo business site, I won't repost the full text:

1. TI issued a warning today that Asia is taking out 6.5 billion of chip sales for 1998 (an industry warning, not TI specific).

2. CRN is reporting that Compaq AND POSSIBLY IBM have major inventory problems "in the channel".

3. And, in Ohio news, "Medina County prosecutors are appealing a judge's dismissal of felony charges against a student who emptied a box of laxatives into a classmate's ice cream sundae." (We all needed something light tonight).

Barry, why don't you post this on the CPQ thread? Maybe E. Pfeiffer will read it there. At least I would love it if he did. I think you hit the nail on the head.

Barry, Re: "This is a message to Eckhard Pfeiffer (sorry if I misspelled your name): Eckhard, my man, twice in it's short existence, Compaq has gone to AMD for CPU chips, in 1994 (could be off a year), and in the past 6 months. In 1994, you pushed AMD 486's against Intel Pentium's. It seemed to me that you (personally) had a vendetta and a personal agenda against Intel. Unfortunately, the customer base..."

Barry, absolutely a stellar post.

Barry, I have posted these points, not as eloquently though, on the CPQ thread. I got blasted and told that CPQ was bigger than Intel and blah, blah, blah. I don't think it helps to go AMD, the majority of people just don't like to buy a product that has no future.

Intel versus CPQ is interesting question. Same approximate sales. INTEL has double the gross margins and profits. Same approximate shares outstanding and about the same PE. So which one is the better growth company. It would seem INTEL has better pricing power and Growth possibilities. Certainly computers are going to increase in power (see last lecture by Steven Hawkings) although simple machines will need simple processors. But people in the box industry have complained for years about all the profits going to INTEL and MSFT in their industry. So I think you made a mistake in selling in the expectation that INTC will go to 60 as the future is more than the next 6 months in this stock and stockprice. Barrett was in town yesterday and seemed to think the same.
