CPQ Presario 4540 using K6/233 wins PCweek Editor's Choice, part II
On the motherboard, you'll find a 233-MHz AMD K6 processor, 256K of L2 cache, and Intel's
430VX chip set. The PC performs graphics tasks using the integrated S3 Trio64 V2-DX engine with
2MB of VRAM, and it offers sound with an ESS AudioDrive chip. There are also two ISA slots and
one ISA/PCI slot; a K56flex modem occupies one ISA slot.

The Presario's performance was excellent, and like the Micron--the only system with better
performance--it has L2 cache. The system posted the second highest ZD Business Winstone 98, ZD
Business Graphics WinMark 98, and ZD CPUmark32 scores. Its ZD Business Disk WinMark 98 score
fell a bit below the HP unit's, but it beat out the scores of the IBM and Packard Bell systems.

Compaq has done a good deal of customization for you. The preloaded browser is Microsoft Internet
Explorer 4.0, and the Favorites tab on the Start menu contains a wide array of preset quick launches
for applications and Internet sites, including those for Microsoft FrontPage, Microsoft Outlook
Express, CNN Interactive, the Compaq Channel, and ZDNet. And to sweeten the deal, Compaq
includes 50 hours of free access if you choose Easy Internet Access from the Compaq Internet Setup.
This is a 90-day trial, during which you may use up to 2 hours per day.

Compaq offers a variety of Presario monitors; we looked at the Presario 1525 ($350 street), which
has a number of front-mounted controls, including volume and mute for the monitor's side-mounted,
adequate JBL Pro speakers mount. The keyboard, however, is disturbingly lightweight and flimsy.

The Presario comes with an array of Microsoft titles (including Works, Encarta, Money, and
Bookshelf) and Intuit's Quicken Basic 98. The system includes CDs for all programs as well as a
system recovery CD.

Minor quibbles aside, this is an impressive machine for those on a budget. If you're not afraid of
screwdrivers or you don't plan on cracking open the case, consider the Compaq Presario 4540.
