Phillip,
When I joined Dell in 1987, (from Compaq), most in the industry said the same thing you did. And they have continued to say it through Dell's incredible rise. (By the way, I left Dell in 1993). Dell actually has the most important success factor in the world going for it...Its customers!! Dell treats its customers better than the other companies, and this translates directly into more sales. Dell does not compete as the lowest price product, and never has. I believe it is Compaq that will have the more difficult future. They are the proud owners of two companies who were unable to adapt themselves to the new information age. I am not convinced Compaq can coax these organizations into profitability, or even synergy with Compaq's own offerings.
