"You can buy the "obsolete" CPQ channel stock w P200 for <$1000 or the new wiz bang P300 for $2k from dell. What do you choose?"

My reasoning would go something like this: I want my people to be more competitive than my competitors. If I pay a premium for PCs of $1,000 and each of my hi-tech employees ($150,000 each including benefits and overhead) is 3% more productive, I come out way ahead. I hope my competitors buy the cheap stuff.

Your point is a good one - I don't see many companies investing in top of the line PCs and most would welcome a break in price. As companies add client server systems (Y2K) they need the PCs but PCs used as the clients generally don't need the power.

Memory is real cheap, and if you load up the cheap PC things with it, give it a decent hard drive, then the cheap things aren't that bad. Everyone is predicting that the Asian Crisis is going to put a bite on profits, which makes the cheap things look more attractive. If I was a gamer, then I'd need the fastest whammo thing that I could get my hands on. The only point I'm trying to make is that nothing is a given, that we live in a dynamic, changing environment, and that no one knows what is going to happen in the near term future until the ripples from Asia finish playing out. One thing is for sure...CPQ has taken a beating. The latest well publicized beatings have attracted many many people to witness the flogging. I came in at 27 and I'm staying and buying more on dips. I may not be in the basement, but I think I'm on the first floor. :)
